Handcrafted in England using the same traditional skills used to create the bears of days gone by, this Punkie has been made using Merrythought's original 1949 Punkinhead pattern!
An exquisite Punkie made from rich blond mohair, she measures 11 inches, is five-way jointed and bean-filled for extra softness. Cream colored mohair accents her tummy and ears while a fun tuft of white mohair tops her head. Punkie's amusing little face comes together with friendly eyes and a cheeky hand-stitched expression. Fit for royalty, she is dressed in a beautiful replica of Her Majesty The Queen's coronation robe. Her robe of high quality cotton velvet has been delicately embroidered with a royal cypher and gold leaf detailing. Satin lining and woven plush trim truly enhance her regal outfit. Her robe is simply secured by gold tassel ties. As a symbol of excellence, she is finished with a prestigious stamp of approval: the famous Merrythought gold-and-black label stitched to the right paw. This Teddy deserved the royal touch, however, and features Englands flag on her foot tag. Punkie Royalty JPA11RY is an edition by Merrythought limited to only 100 pieces worldwide. Suitable for ages 3 and up. Please remove all accessories, ribbons and labels before giving to a child aged below age 3.
'Punkie', a funny little Teddy bear
The year 1949 saw the introduction of one of the most iconic of all Merrythought bears... a young bear called Punkinhead. Punkinhead was originally designed for Eaton's... Canada's largest department store chain. Every year the Toronto store sponsored the Toronto Santa Claus Parade, a huge event enthusiastically supported by local residents. When a rival department store created a popular character called Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, Eaton's hit back with an invention of their own... Punkinhead, a funny little Teddy bear who had a thick woolly tuft of hair and, like Rudolph, had hurdles to overcome before he was accepted by his peers. In December 1948, Punkinhead led the Toronto Santa Claus Parade and won the hearts of thousands of children. Realizing they were onto a winner, Eaton's approached Merrythought for a soft toy version of their endearing little bear. Today Punkinhead is known as 'Punkie.'
