Punkie Nelson
by Merrythought

Handcrafted in England using the same traditional skills used to create the bears of days gone by, this Punkie has been made using Merrythought's original 1949 Punkinhead pattern!

Punkie Nelson is a charming little bear with a striking appeal. Measuring 7 inches, Nelson is five-way jointed and bean-filled for extra softness. He has the finest pure white mohair with touches of dark blue on his tummy and ears to complement his blue and white striped bow. Cotton velvet foot pads and all-wool paws are the perfect tactile touches. His friendly eyes and a cheerful hand-stitched expression come together to create an unforgettable face. As a symbol of excellence, Punkie Nelson is finished with a prestigious stamp of approval: the famous Merrythought gold-and-black label stitched to the right paw. Punkie Nelson JP7NLN is a Merrythought edition limited to only 75 pieces worldwide. Suitable for ages 3 and up. Please remove all accessories, ribbons and labels before giving to a child aged below age 3.

'Punkie', a funny little Teddy bear
The year 1949 saw the introduction of one of the most iconic of all Merrythought bears... a young bear called Punkinhead. Punkinhead was originally designed for Eaton's... Canada's largest department store chain. Every year the Toronto store sponsored the Toronto Santa Claus Parade, a huge event enthusiastically supported by local residents. When a rival department store created a popular character called Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, Eaton's hit back with an invention of their own... Punkinhead, a funny little Teddy bear who had a thick woolly tuft of hair and, like Rudolph, had hurdles to overcome before he was accepted by his peers. In December 1948, Punkinhead led the Toronto Santa Claus Parade and won the hearts of thousands of children. Realizing they were onto a winner, Eaton's approached Merrythought for a soft toy version of their endearing little bear. Today Punkinhead is known as 'Punkie.'

A History Of Fine, Handmade Teddy Bears In England Since Before 1930

Merrythought“Merrythought has been hand-making the quintessential English teddy bear in the World Heritage Site of Ironbridge, Shropshire, since 1930 and is now the last remaining British teddy bear manufacturer. The company is a fourth generation family business founded by Mr W.G Holmes in 1930 as a diversification from his mohair mill in Yorkshire. Over the years a huge range of teddy bears, soft toys, dolls, push-along toys, rocking horses and other animals have been created in the famous factory.”

Why The Merrythought Emblem Is A Wishbone

Merrythought wishboneThe origin of the name Merrythought derives from an archaic name for a wishbone, a symbol of 'good luck'.
The wishbone has been the company's emblem since 1930.

The World-Famous Merrythought Footlabel

Merrythought bears can be easily identified by the distinctive label on their footpad - traditionally on the right foot although some earlier bears may vary.
