Margarete Steiff Elephant On Wheels Club Edition EAN 421600
by Steiff

For the first time in history, Steiff's designers and craftspeople have created an exquisite elephant on wheels sewn from unique paper plush.

A Margarete Steiff Black Label Edition
Limited To Only 139 Worldwide

Commemorating the 110th anniversary of Margarete Steiff's passing and in anticipation of the company's 140th year in business, Steiff presents a breathtaking white elephant made of paper plush. The elephant honors the first toy sewn by Margarete Steiff, and pays tribute to the company's earliest mascot on the 'Button in Ear' trademark. Measuring 11 inches tall and 14 inches long, the elephant will be produced in an edition of only 139 pieces. It will be made available to Club members exclusively.

Paper plush is perhaps the most fascinating of all materials used to create Steiff animals. During and immediately following the First World War, the company was unable to source adequate supplies of its traditional materials, such as mohair and felt. Utilizing an abundant supply of forest products in the area, technicians at Schulte cleverly developed a tweed-like paper plush material, called Brennessel, which was made from nettles. Items manufactured from this material appeared in Steiff catalogues from 1919 through 1921, and included bears, dogs, cats, and rabbits. After an absence of nearly 90 years from the Steiff assortment, this unique material made a nostalgic return when the technology required to manufacture it was rediscovered in 2010. The resulting brown paper plush Teddy replica was a smashing success. It was followed by an equally popular white version in 2014. Six years later, history is being made once again with Steiff's first-ever paper plush white elephant. Befitting an edition which marks two historic milestones, great care has been taken to ensure that each aspect of this special black label edition is deluxe in every way.

Button And Tag
The brushed, stainless steel button with the initials 'MS' ('Margarete Steiff') will be riveted into the elephant's ear. It will be accompanied by a black jacquard woven label, signifying the elephant’s status as a rare collectible reserved exclusively for Steiff Club members.

A Special Color
In choosing the color, Steiff head designer Dietmar Simon drew inspiration from photographs of a bright white elephant snow sculpture created for Margarete Steiff (by Hugo and Ernst Steiff) in 1898. The texture and color of the paper plush is reminiscent of the appearance of snow in the vintage images.

Wheel Caps And Wheels
Supplier Fa. Herz, of Epfendorf, made the wheel caps from 0.5 mm high quality, high gloss stainless steel plates. The artwork for the wheel cap was adapted from a drawing used on Steiff shipping boxes in the early 1900s. It consists of the famous 'Fabrik Marke' logo, which shows an elephant on wheels with an 'S'-shaped trunk. The technique used to depict this motif is raised and high gloss. The matte back-ground has been polished in acid, allowing for extremely precise contouring and surfaces.
The master craftsmen at Fa. Weiss of Sontheim (a small town near Giengen) lathed each wooden wheel from solid beech wood, then painted them individually with cream white.

Elephant Tusks
To create the perfect tusks for this rare limited edition, resin tusk specimens from a 1950s Steiff archival elephant were hand-selected for 3-D imaging. The physical vintage tusk samples were sent along with the computer imaging data to the Baden-Wurttemberg jewelry-making firm of Andreas Daub. This prestigious fifth-generation family business was founded in Pforzheim in 1872. The company was recommended to Steiff by Tiffany, the famed New York jeweller. The finely wrought tusks on the completed elephants illustrate the quality that can be achieved when the precision of high technology is used as a complement to the artistry of hand craftsmanship. Each pair of tusks is made from solid 925 sterling silver. Individually, the tusks weigh 27 grams. They are stamped in accordance with international specifications on each end.

The elephant's glass eyes are distinguished by their simple elegance. Each is outlined in a metallic rim to mirror the silver components visible elsewhere on the elephant.

A Special Edition Needs A Special Package packaging
Luxurious, exquisitely crafted packaging is used for this exceptional set. A round-shaped package, first in the entire history of Margarete Steiff editions, has been created to complement the circular shape of the wheels of the elephant.

Will you be one of the lucky 139 Steiff collectors worldwide who will own this very special Margarete Steiff black tag set?

The Tradition Of Steiff
Creator Of The First Teddy Bear

Steiff Button in EarAs the second oldest German toy company still in existence, Steiff has had a very influential role in how the world plays.

Margarete Steiff designed her first soft-filled fabric toy animal, an elephant made of felt, and began the family business. Margarete's nephew Richard Steiff studied art in Stuttgart and brought a heightened sense of realism to Steiff designs. In 1902, Steiff created the 55PB, a mohair plush bear that is the basis for the modern Teddy Bear we know today.

In 1902, Clifford Berryman, a well-know cartoonist for the Washington Post, made popular a caricature little bear with American president Theodore Roosevelt: thus, the "Teddy" bear was born. Children and adults have made the Teddy bear an iconic toy, universally loved and adored. Over the years, Steiff's focus on delighting children with realistic soft animals brought them fame around the world. Their innovations in airbrushing, choice materials and manufacturing have created toys that are prized everywhere.

Steiff continues to create Teddy bears and other animal friends at their factory in the small town of Giengen, Germany. After 125 years, Steiff continues to lead the world in the finest Teddy bear designs and manufacturing. Their commitment to quality and excellence has brought joy to generations around the world.

The very first box of merchandise that we opened for our shoppe in 1975 was filled with Steiff Teddy bears and it was exhilarating! We established The Toy Shoppe way back then to bring fine dolls and Teddy bears to our collectors. With their long tradition and commitment to excellence, Steiff bears are a natural fit for our shoppe.

In the early 1900s, Richard Steiff created the modern Teddy bear as we know and love him today. Steiff's continued innovation and commitment to quality has touched generations of children around the world.

Over the years, Steiff collectors in the USA and around the world have turned to The Toy Shoppe for their Steiff bears and animals. Our selection is unmatched. We have worked closely with Steiff both in North America and in Germany to design exclusive editions for our collectors that are compelling to Steiff collectors and Teddy bear lovers alike. We travelled to Giengen, Germany to search for inspiration deep within Steiff's archives, their treasure trove of past editions that reaches into their rich history. Maximilian began our Steiff Teddy bear family over a decade ago and since then we've created a wide array of Steiff editions exclusively for our collectors. From Traveller to Little Bear to GrandPapa to Chub-ling to Polar Cub to little Jocko, each one has brought a unique character of Steiff design often introducing innovative techniques or materials in their production. Collectors have adored our Toy Shoppe exclusives by Steiff!
