Royal Air Force 100 Appeal Teddy
by Merrythought

2018 marks The Royal Air Force's 100th anniversary as the world's first independent air force. This is a nationally and internationally significant event. The Royal Air Force is held in high regard by the international air force community as the most innovative, professional and progressive of air power. (RAF Benevolent Fund. Support The Royal Air Force Charities To Build A Lasting Legacy. www.raf100appeal.org. 2018.)

Alongside the events and celebrations that will follow over the coming months, Merrythought has created an official collectable Teddy bear to commemorate this 100 year milestone, while helping to raise funds for the RAF's charities (aka RAF Appeal).

This special centenary Teddy has been hand-crafted in Shropshire, England and is the official RAF Appeal Teddy. Made of the softest pure mohair, he is 10 inches and five-way jointed. His beautiful milk chocolate mohair coat is paired with cotton velvet paw pads. He features a cheerful hand-stitched smile and nose with the most friendly, endearing eyes. A tactile, bean-filled tummy makes this Teddy a great hug and the perfect weight. A luxurious satin ribbon tied around his neck beautifully displays the Royal Air Force 100 Appeal logo... the perfect finishing touch. As a signature of quality, the Royal Air Force Centenary Teddy is finished with a prestigious stamp of approval: the famous Merrythought gold-and-black label stitched to the right paw. Suitable for ages 3 and up. Please remove ribbon and labels before giving to a child aged below age 3. Production limited to the year 2018.

Part of the processeds from the sale of this Teddy bear is donated to Royal Air Force charities includine: The RAF Benevolent Fund, RAF Charitable Trust, RAF Museum and the RAF Association.

What Is The RAF Appeal?

The RAF100 Appeal is a joint venture between the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force and four major RAF charities: the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund, the Royal Air Forces Association, the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust and the Royal Air Force Museum. The aim of the Appeal is to raise money for the RAF Family and to create a lasting legacy as we celebrate 100 years of the Royal Air Force in 2018.

Numerous activities and events will take place across the UK from 2017 until the end of September 2018. The Appeal forms part of the wider RAF100 initiative that seeks to commemorate the achievements of the RAF and all those who have served while at the same time celebrating the vital contribution that the RAF continues to make, and inspire both the public and the RAF Family as we look forward to the next 100 years.

A History Of Fine, Handmade Teddy Bears In England Since Before 1930

Merrythought“Merrythought has been hand-making the quintessential English teddy bear in the World Heritage Site of Ironbridge, Shropshire, since 1930 and is now the last remaining British teddy bear manufacturer. The company is a fourth generation family business founded by Mr W.G Holmes in 1930 as a diversification from his mohair mill in Yorkshire. Over the years a huge range of teddy bears, soft toys, dolls, push-along toys, rocking horses and other animals have been created in the famous factory.”

Why The Merrythought Emblem Is A Wishbone

Merrythought wishboneThe origin of the name Merrythought derives from an archaic name for a wishbone, a symbol of 'good luck'.
The wishbone has been the company's emblem since 1930.

The World-Famous Merrythought Footlabel

Merrythought bears can be easily identified by the distinctive label on their footpad - traditionally on the right foot although some earlier bears may vary.
