Blue Madonna Santo

Spanish for saint, a Santo is a type of religious art that first began in Spain. Icons and similar religious images were common in the Roman Catholic Church, which played an integral part of the Spanish colonization of the Americas. These wooden figures have simple frameworks since they were covered and dressed in elaborate costumes and wigs for each feast day or religious holiday. The Madonna, a representation of Mary, is the most revered and her image was created in many variations.

For the Eric Cortina Santos Collection, the process begins in the Philippines, where the European art of carving Santos and other religious objects was passed down over many generations. Artists start with Eric’s original design and hand-carve each piece from mahogany. A different expert carver then creates the santos' head and hands using softer wood.

After each piece is carved, it is entirely covered in gesso, which provides a surface for the various layers of paint used in Eric’s finishing process.

After the Santo arrives in Eric Cortina's studio, he begins by painting it with two to three individual base colors. He then applies stains to the body that give the piece its aged appearance. The heads and hands are given special attention, with additional layers of paint and stain to providing a lifelike look and the appearance of aged enamel paint. Finally, the Santos is sanded and distressed, each piece finished with Eric's amazing artistry, creating a unique work of art.
